What Is a Dry Socket?

A dry socket occurs when the blood clot is dislodged prematurely from the tooth socket. Symptoms include pain at the surgical site and pain radiating toward the ear, typically appearing 3-5 days after surgery. If you suspect a dry socket, call our office for evaluation and treatment.

Recovery Timeline

Day 1

Rest. Apply ice packs. Take medications as directed. Soft foods and liquids only.

Days 2-3

Swelling peaks. Continue ice for first 36 hours, then switch to moist heat. Begin salt water rinses.

Days 4-5

Swelling and discomfort should begin to decrease. Continue salt water rinses and gentle brushing.

Week 1

Sutures dissolve. Most patients return to normal activity. Continue eating soft foods as needed.

Weeks 2-4

Surgical site continues to fill in with new tissue. Resume all normal activities and diet.
